Puma Champions Cup Results: Congratulations to the five teams that travelled out of state and competed at the Puma Champions Cup in Rockford, IL. Based on the way the tournament was set up, our teams had to deal with several different challenges - e.g. increased playing numbers for the younger age levels - e.g. 7 v 7 and 9 v 9, instead of our norm of 6 v 6 and 8 v 8. And, as will happen at tournaments, some age groups were combined forcing teams to play up. The increased challenges made things more exciting, helped the players grow and created some wonderful soccer. The fact this was the first out-of-state event for these younger teams added to the buzz. |

Coach Leung and three of his "Magnificent 7" -
Brenna Hartner, Tina Schaar and Anna Stollhans,
three of the seven seeds that were the beginning of the Phoenix Soccer Club
and are the foundation of the Phoenix Elite.
Enough cannot be said of the "Magnificent 7's" vision, courage and
commitment, over these past four years.
No doubt, the Phoenix Elite's current GOT Soccer ranking says it all.

conquered fear and doubt has conquered failure."

PHOENIX ELITE (MI) 1
When your opening game of a premier elite tournament is with the 24th ranked team in the country (Slammers FC 91 North), it is quite a rush. An exciting first half ended with a 0 - 0 scoreline which meant it was all to play for in the second half. The Slammers got on the scoreboard first. But the Phoenix Elite came storming back as Addy Schaar got played in and fought off two defenders to score the equalizer.
|
With 90 seconds left in the game, everyone took it for granted that this battle royale would end in a tie. Then the unexpected happened. The Slammers launched the ball towards the Phoenix goal. Every player but one stopped as the Phoenix keeper looked to have things totally under control, covering and collecting the easy roller. A half second later, the ball was in the Phoenix goal as the one player that followed up the shot, a Slammer, found herself with an open goal as the ball squirted out from under the keeper's body. To leave the field of competition, after such a monumental effort, against a nationally ranked opponent, with no points to show for it was a numbing experience. Like life, soccer can be quite cruel at times. |
|
Somehow I can't believe there are any heights that can't be
scaled by a man who knows the secret of making dreams come true.
This special secret, it seems to me, can be summarized in four C's. They are
Curiosity, Confidence, Courage, and Constancy.
And the greatest of these is Confidence. When you believe a thing, believe it
all the way, implicitly and unquestionably.
-- Walt Disney

PHOENIX ELITE 4 With a slim mathematical probability of advancing, the Phoenix poured it on against a Canadian team that had also played it tight by losing their first game by the odd goal and tying their second game and were also mathematically still in it in what turned out to be a highly competitive bracket. Linsey Snavely got the scoring started early in the first half followed by Addy Schaar, Shelby Marsh. Linsey Snavely got her second goal, the Phoenix fourth, in the second half. Unfortunately, the Slammers won going away in their final game of bracket play and then went on to win the tournament while the Phoenix Elite were left to rue what might have been. |

RUSH KICKOFF CLASSIC WRAPUP:
The 00 Navy played at a torrid pace in this event and won the championship going away.
The fact that such a solid team performance was turned in this early in the season speaks of more achievements to come. Goalkeepers: Elise Biederman and Gabrielle Pudvay. Goalscorers for the weekend: Gabrielle Pudvay (7); Savannah Selby (2); Morgan Goggins (1); Elise Biederman (3); Maddie Smith (3); Morgan Metzger (3); and Sophie Bubnar (1).
Kudos to all the girls: Grace Adkins, Grace Taverniti, Madison Drass, Tayler Harms, Makenna Hass, Shelby Morrow, Lexi Biederman, Katie Burgess, and Madeline Mathenia.
U16 STATE CUP:
The girls jumped out to a comfortable 2 - 0 lead and then allowed the opposition back in for a 2 - 1 scoreline in the second half. "Normal service" was restored when the girls jumped out again to a two goal cushion with a 3 - 1 scoreline. However, to their credit, the MI Express weren't going to go away. And, after converting a free kick to make it 3 - 2, they made the final minutes of the game rather exciting. |
